Web ads & more
There's an online dating service - no, I'm not going to tell you which one - which claims to screen all of its members to make sure none of them are married, ex-cons, etc. This in an effort to provide "quality" people with whom one might be able to find true love. Admirable intentions, yes?
Then why do all of their ads feature scantily-clad women in suggestive poses?
I think there's a mixed message here.
Next, I wandered over to CNN.com for part of my morning news fix, and found an ad that looked *exceedingly* well-tailored to me geographically. It offered to exchange my coffee maker at a mall about five miles away from here. That I don't drink coffee is something that I'm not going to ding them style points for, as I'm just as happy when people *don't* have that much info on my preferences. :) I was briefly amazed that they were pinpointing my location that well.
Then I noticed that the dates for the exchanges were, in fact, earlier this week. Nice try, but no cigar. Or coffee.
TV and radio ads deserve their own entry, but after listening to way too many investment and loan ads all week, I've been reminded of an old saying: By the time someone's willing to advertise it on radio, it's not such a good deal anymore. If it were still a good deal, they'd be sucking up all the profit for themselves.
Unless I get to start advertising my CDs. Those will *always* be a good deal. :)
